What you can communicate on packaging
Packaging is small and expensive to print on. With a QR code every package becomes a multi-function info source:
- User manual: Instead of a 30-page paper insert in 27 languages โ one online manual with a language selector.
- Warranty registration: The customer scans right after purchase and registers their warranty. Reduces your service workload.
- Product review: "How satisfied are you?" โ directly to Trustpilot or your own review system.
- Recipe database: Food manufacturers link cooking recipes to their products.
- Authenticity check: Premium brands use QR codes as an anti-counterfeiting mechanism.
- Cross-sell: "Recommended for this product: matching accessories in the shop."
- Newsletter sign-up: "Stay informed about new products."
- Recycling instructions: How to dispose of the packaging correctly? Required in many countries.
Best practices for packaging QR codes
- Minimum size 1.5 ร 1.5 cm: For packaging held in the hand. Smaller only with very sharp printing.
- Placement: On the front or side, NEVER on a fold or curve. On a curved surface (e.g. a bottle), the QR must be 30% larger.
- SVG for print: High-resolution, sharp at any print size. Never JPG.
- High contrast: Black on white, or in the packaging's branding โ but dark on light.
- Matte material: Glossy paper reflects. Especially critical on plastic packaging โ test before a large print run.
- CTA text: "Scan for manual", "Register warranty", "More recipes" โ never just the bare QR.
- Multi-language hint: International products: "EN/FR/IT/ES" next to the QR โ the user knows the online page supports multiple languages.
Special packaging challenges
Glass bottle / curved surface
Curvature distorts the QR code. Solution: print the QR larger (at least 2.5 ร 2.5 cm) and place it on the flattest part.
Foil / cellophane
Glossy material reflects. Solution: choose matte film or stick the QR code on a separate label.
Frozen-food packaging
When thawing, condensation forms on the surface. Solution: use wipe-resistant ink or print the QR code on the inner label (under the film).
