What you can communicate on packaging
Packaging is small and expensive to print. With a QR code, every package becomes a multifunctional information source:
- Instructions: Instead of a 30-page paper insert in 27 languages โ an online guide with a selection menu.
- Warranty registration: Customer scans right after purchase, registers their warranty. Reduces your support volume.
- Product review: "How satisfied are you?" โ directly to Trustpilot or your own review system.
- Recipe database: Food manufacturers link recipes to their products.
- Authenticity verification: Premium brands use QR codes as an anti-counterfeiting mechanism.
- Cross-sell: "Recommended for this product: matching accessories in the shop."
- Newsletter signup: "Stay informed about new products."
- Recycling information: How should packaging be disposed of properly? Required in many countries.
Best practices for packaging QR codes
- Minimum size 1.5 ร 1.5 cm: For packaging held in hand. Smaller sizes only work with very sharp printing.
- Placement: On front or side surface, NEVER on folds or curves. On curved surfaces (e.g., bottles), the QR code must be 30% larger.
- SVG for printing: High resolution, sharp at any print size. Never JPG.
- High contrast: Black on white or in your packaging branding โ but dark on light.
- Matte material: Glossy paper reflects light. Especially critical for plastic packaging โ test before large print runs.
- CTA text: "Scan instructions", "Register warranty", "More recipes" โ never just a bare QR code.
- Multi-language note: International products: "EN/FR/IT/ES" next to the QR code โ users know the website supports multiple languages.
Special packaging challenges
Glass bottle / curved surface
Curvature distorts the QR code. Solution: print the QR code larger (minimum 2.5 ร 2.5 cm) and place it on the flattest part.
Film / cellophane
Glossy material reflects light. Solution: choose matte film or apply the QR code to a separate label.
Freezer packaging
Condensation forms on the surface when thawing. Solution: use smudge-resistant ink or print the QR code on an inner label (outside the film).
